This institute was started in the year 1986 by the Department of Technical Education, Vocational & Industrial Training, Government of Himachal Pradesh with the aim to provide vocational training to large number of rural youth and women folk of Dehra Sub – Division of Kangra District. Initially the Institution was started with one trade, Stenography Hindi in a rented building Near Shiva Temple at Nehran Pukhar. Electrician & Mechanic Motor Vehicle Trades were introduced to strengthen the Institute in 1987 In 1994, on the construction of Institution’s own building/workshop the trades were shifted to new institution campus. The campus is spread in 29 Kanals of land with modern type building. Keeping in the view the demand of the industry new trades like Fitter, Welder, Cutting & Sewing were added in this institution. This is first co - educational institute in Himachal Pradesh to start Embroidery & Needle Work trade in July, 2000 to meet the growing need of female & male trainees after Passing Cutting & Sewing Trade.

All the courses /trades of the Institution are affiliated with National Council for Vocational Training, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The examination ( known as a final trade test) are on annual bases through out the country are conducted by the body NCVT, Govt. of India, New Delhi. Himachal Pradesh Takniki Shiksha Board, Dharamshala evaluate the examination Paper & Practical and prepare the results of all the Trades. The training programme in the State is looked after/governed by the SCVT with Directorate at Sunder Nagar, Distt. Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

The Central Govt. has introduced schemes namely

(i) upgrading ITIs into Center of Excellence (COE)
(ii) upgrading ITIs through Public Private Partnership mode (PPP Mode)
(iii) Modular Employable Skills (MES)through skill development initiative scheme.

This institute is covered under PPP mode for up gradation. MES scheme is also being implemented by this institute in letter & spirit.

LAND AND BUILDING:

This Institute has adequate land and building with a total area of 38 Kanals This Institute was started in the rented building in the year 1986.

The hostel building having an intake capacity of 30 trainees was taken over on Ist August, 1999.

The New Workshop Building was taken over on 1991 .

Accommodation for some staff is also avilable in the institute.
At present, there are 4 Nos. of Type-II quarters for staff and 1 No. Type-IV quarter for Principal. Type-II quarters were taken over in August 1992 and Type-IV quarter was taken over in August 1994.
